CLARKE BRACE AS MAGPIES WIN ON THE ROAD.
Wimborne Town made it five wins out of five in their 2010 programme with a 4-1 victory in a Wessex Premier League fixture at Fareham Town. Tom Clarke rediscovered his goalscoring touch in grandstand style with a double, while skipper Paul Roast and Scott Joyce added the other two.

With Kev James unavailable and Liam Green not fully recovered from Saturday’s injury, Scott Joyce made his return, along with Tom Clarke. Joyce joined Gareth Barnes up front, with James Stokoe and Clarke moving into midfield, alongside John Wyatt, Steve Whitcher and Ben Thomson. Paul Roast, James Wilson and Sam Lockyer again made up a three man back row, with Al walker-Harris behind them in goal. Liam Green, Dan Haysom, Alex Browne, and Nick Hutchings were on the bench.

With Fareham going well in fifth place, and never easy to beat at home, this looked like being a challenging game for Wimborne who nonetheless almost got the ideal start after four minutes when Tom Clarke’s shot from outside the area was well tipped over by the Fareham keeper. For the next half hour the play was shared pretty evenly, with each keeper required to make a good save, though Wimborne looked the sharper in front of goal. But on 34 minutes it was Fareham who broke the deadlock when a shot came back off the foot of Al Walker-Harris’s right hand post into the path of Graham Lindsey, who doesn’t miss chances like that.

Wimborne struck back within two minutes when the ball ran loose inside the Fareham area and Clarke reacted quickly to fire the ball in, via a deflection off a defender. A minute later Gareth Barnes should have made it two but headed Clarke’s cross over the bar from six yards. Barnsey usually puts those away, but four minutes later Scott Joyce reminded him to do it when he gave Wimborne the lead with a header from a similar position.

After the break, Fareham came back strongly and pressured the Wimborne defence. A single goal lead looked fragile, but the defence coped well, and Al mopped up anything that got past. Wimborne looked dangerous on the break, and on 68 minutes a good save by the keeper only pushed the ball onto the post and Paul Roast put the rebound in from close range to give Wimborne a comfort zone.

Although Fareham kept trying, Wimborne now had the situation pretty much under control and on 77 minutes a superb run by Clarke from deep in his own half was only foiled by another good save by the Fareham keeper, With seven minutes remaining Clarke sealed the game with a low shot across the goal.

This was an excellent win and, in the end, a comfortable one for Wimborne. It was a skilful and determined all round performance, with Tom Clarke outstanding and back on top form after his injury lay-off.

Wimborne team: Walker-Harris, Wilson, Lockyer, Roast, Wyatt (Haysom 79), Whitcher, Clarke, Stokoes, Joyce, Barnes (Green 73), Thomson. Subs not used: Brown, Hutchings.
