MAGPIES HELD
Although Tom Clarke gave Wimborne Town the lead at Winchester City, the Magpies dropped their first points of 2010 as they were held to a 1-1 draw.

With Paul Roast and John Wyatt injured, Alex Browne joined James Wilson and Sam Lockyer in a three man back row. Kev James returned, alongside Liam Green, Steve Whitcher, James Stokoe and Ben Thomson in midfield, and Scott Joyce and Tom Clarke were up front, with Al Walker-Harris in goal. Recent signings Perry Mullins and Lee Chudy started on the bench along with with Gareth Banes, Dan Haysom and Nick Hutchings.

Winchester started the game looking the more solid, but Wimborne slowly came into it with Kev James Giving the left side of the home defence a torrid time. It paid off mid way though the half when Kev pressured the left back into an under-hit back-pass and followed up to push the ball past the keeper and present Tom Clarke with a simple tap in.

Wimborne continued with good approach work, but consistently failed to turn it into scoring chances. The closest to a second goal was foiled by the keeper, who did well to deflect Ben Thomson’s cross away from the head of a diving Scott Joyce.

Winchester had looked even less likely to score, but on the stroke of half time equalised when Alex Browne got in a good tackle but the ball took a deflection which left Al Walker-Harris with no chance.

In the second half Wimborne had more of the play, but again failed to turn it into chances, and when the ball was played into the area the Winchester keeper was quick to lay claim. Liam Green and James Stokoe had shots that went close, but not close enough, and Wimborne had a good shout for a penalty when the ball appeared to strike the defender’s arm, but the ref adjudged it to be his chest.

Gareth Barnes came on in place of Joyce, and headed over the bar from a quickly taken free kick. Later in the game, Perry Mullins and Lee Chudy made brief appearances, and Mullins was only prevented from getting the winner by an excellent save from the keeper.

It was disappointing to drop points in a game Wimborne should have won, but all credit to the Winchester defence for restricting Wimborne’s chances. Kev James was outstanding for Wimborne.

Wimborne team: Walker-Harris, Wilson, Lockyer, Browne, Whitcher, James, Green, Stokoe, Joyce (Barnes 69), Clarke (Chudy 83), Thomson (Mullins 79). Subs not used: Haysom, Hutchings.
